We are all facing unprecedented times during this Pandemic. I think the saddest thing I have heard is how students will have limited access to books. Our library will not allow for book circulation and there are almost impossible standards to adhere to in order to utilize a classroom library. Making a switch to e-readers provides students with access to books.
My students must have access to reading materials during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Without books, students are not able to advance interests, read for pleasure, practice reading skills, or escape a truly scary time through the act of reading. Books can provide an escape for students who are struggling socially and emotionally during a time that has affected us all differently. I truly believe that finding reading material that can transport us to magical lands and allow us to connect with diverse characters and expose us to people and cultures that we might not interact with in their everyday lives is a very important part in developing empathy. I want to emphasize the importance of reading in this climate for more than just to gain information, but to escape and spend time with characters in places that take us away from the scary times we are living in now.
