As I started 30 minute Zoom lesson where I was able to create structure for the preschool students. Some were showing up, but not all. I did my best to make lessons fun using online activities for them but I felt like there was something missing. As I continued our Zoom lessons I continued to learn and adjust and wondered how I could make these activities, I have with them fun and meaningful in a 30-minute block. But at that time, I wasn’t able to do hands-on activities with them because the question became do these families have the items that they need at home in order for the students to perform the activities. Our students are diverse and from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Maybe some families did, and some didn’t. So the biggest concern became equity. How can I ask my students to participate in an online activity while at the same time assuring that they could all participate and be able to obtain those items needed for that activity? Do they all have scissors at home? Do they all have playdoh at home? Do they all have a rolling pin at home? Do they all have counting bears (or any other counting item as a manipulative) at home? As I start my planning for the 2020/2021 school year, I ask myself that same question. And looking into the future I would like for all my students to be able to have these items readily available for them to accomplish art activities, literacy activities, math activities, science activities, from home, during our online lessons, and participate and engage in the class. I want to be able to provide a little baggy that has those specific items for my students to be more successful this year.
