In my 11th and 12th grade English courses, I want to foster a passion for reading that will prepare them for success in a collegiate environment. In the reading lounge, students will have the opportunity to explore fictional worlds, become global learners via non-fiction works, and learn how to annotate and retain knowledge from informative texts. I consider daily reading to be a crucial foundational skill for college students and I believe that students who enter higher education without such a skill are predisposed to greater frustration with content, decreased self confidence, and academic delays. A reading lounge would be a safe space for students to make reading an everyday part of their lives, a task that would be invaluable to prospective college students.
