I currently have a well used set of calculators in my classroom; many have screen cracks, missing buttons, or just don't fully function. We are making it work with what is available, but I would love to replace the most broken calculators with some that actually work correctly! Many of my students have low levels of basic math skills and providing regular calculator usage will allow them to focus on developing their Algebra skills, instead of worrying about the arithmetic. They often feel insecure about their work because they lack confidence in their number sense; this is especially problematic when performing basic operations with fractions, decimals, and negative values. The majority of my students are bright and work hard in class; it is heart breaking to see them understand most of the Algebra lesson but then they struggle with the details like adding fractions.
