We use hands-on manipulatives in math class to make sense of difficult concepts such as adding fractions and measuring and drawing angles. Tools such as fraction circles allow students to create whole circles from smaller parts where they can literally see how fractions can be added, subtracted, and multiplied. Angle rulers are a fabulous tool that can be used to measure angles and draw shapes. Protractors are common tools used in math and are necessary for students to continue building their skills in math while learning how to effectively and efficiently draw angles and measure side lengths of shapes. These tools are normally shared by three classrooms, however, this year while learning remotely my students will need to have the tools at home so they can follow along with me while we learn online. Students are able to learn these difficult skills by doing and using hands-on tools so that they can continue making real world connections in math.
