As a 1st year teacher, I am outfitting my classroom to optimize learning & interest in science. Alternative seating & lighting, plus a few bits of science bling will help me create an intriguing and welcoming space for my students to learn. Studies have shown that when students are given enriched learning environments, test scores and retention increase. The flexible seating will allow students additional options of maximize effective learning choices. The comfy seating pads and stools will let students share "carpet time" and science lab time in ways that let them get the wiggles out. The alternate lighting creates a more conducive atmosphere than fluorescent lighting, allowing for more adaptability in the classroom. The science bling will help me arouse interest in science and the applications of what they are learning in class. The solar system model, inclined ramp model and the tuning forks will give students hands-on opportunities to experience physics and astronomy for themselves, rather than just reading or hearing about it. Research has shown that a hands-on, student-centered approach to teaching is most effective.
