Students will be provided with diverse and culturally relevant books and have the opportunity to share their learning through book talks and book reports, and discuss through literature circles. I hope that by providing students many engaging options we can open the door to tough conversations that relate to social justice issues of today as well as creating a broader worldview by understanding other's diverse backgrounds and points of view. Some of the titles include Stamped from the Beginning, American Born Chinese, A Good Kind of Trouble, Dear Martin, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, and Ghost Boys. These books feature authors of varying backgrounds and ethnicity. It is important students have books they can see themselves in and topics that create empathy and understanding of others; and having a selection in my classroom library will help students do so.
