All students deserve access to equitable education, but it can be hard to get funds allocated toward special education classrooms. Special education students are all too often lost in the shuffle, and the risk is even greater now due to the pandemic. Seeing as our school is located in an under-resourced community, many of our students’ families can’t afford to help bring resources like these magazines into the classroom. Having culturally relevant and engaging reading material is crucial for our students. Countless times, the same, tired novels are recycled for use year after year in English classrooms, but these novels often do not present diverse and/or relevant perspectives. These magazines allow our students to see material relevant to their lives, engaging them in a subject that may be difficult or frustrating for them. Achieving educational equity does not just involve giving everyone equal opportunities. Rather, it requires educators treat each student individually and find students culturally relevant material to build their confidence in themselves as scholars offering unique perspectives on the world.
