Books for high school students must be exciting and relevant to their lives, as well as engaging and diverse. That's a tall order for any teacher to fulfill! Like many districts, funding is short and needs are long---especially when it comes to literacy. Each book on this list, most of which are geared toward enhancing student engagement with the world around us, will grow our students as readers and writers. Students will be able to engage with poetry, short stories, novels, and memoirs that will help build background knowledge and increase empathy. They will also be able to participate in lit circles.
