As a first year teacher, I am limited on the learning supplies I can provide for my students. We have spent the entire school year thus far through virtual learning. In 5th grade, students learn all about decimals, fractions, measurement, and geometry. Each one of those areas of mathematics is learned best through real world examples- money, fraction tiles, measuring tools, and so on. Without the application of the new material they are learning, new content isn't retained at the same level. My students have endured through months of learning these new and difficult concepts with only virtual instruction. With returning to school in February, I want to provide them with as many hands-on experiences as possible to solidify everything they have learned thus far. Remote learning has limited the ability to use manipulatives in the classroom, and the donations provided to this project will help deepen mathematical understanding in my students. I hope to have enough supplies in the classroom this year that each student can utilize the materials without "sharing" with one another due to COVID restrictions.
