My students are learning to have a growth mindset to achieve the goals in which they set. As their teacher, I want to help foster their love of learning and desire to grow, by giving them engaging literacy centers that will help them apply their action plans and help make their learning goals a reality. Nothing is more exciting that seeing the look on a child's face when their hard work has paid off and they meet their goal- It is my absolute favorite thing to witness as their teacher! Some of the main goals of my kindergarten students is working with letters and their sounds. Giving them a solid foundation in phonics and phonemic awareness helps pave the way for reading. The science of reading curriculum we are using in our class is backed by science to help build students as stronger readers and writers. One component of this is the students engaging in centers to practice and apply what they have learned in the mini lessons. Students will use whiteboards, markers and dry erase pockets to practice writing and math skills. The supplies (and supply storage) for this project will build independent literacy centers for each student. Students will be able to practice handwriting strokes on different surfaces (sand paper and mesh) to help them feel the attributes of each letter to help them easier identify it. Additional centers will help students by giving them the tools that they need (that aligns with the science of reading curriculum) to build a solid foundation in letter identification and letter sounds and meet their independent literacy goals and grow them as pre-readers. My students will transfer their knowledge independently into their center works. The supplies purchased for this project will make independent centers to help reach my students on the level they are at and help them reach their goals.
