I am requesting a class set of the book "The Life and Death of the Great Lakes". My students and I are embarking on a new high school science course this school year - Aquatic Science. There will be a large emphasis on Great Lakes ecology since we live just a handful of miles from Lake Huron. One of my main goals is to help students learn how to cherish and protect the Great Lakes. Learning about the health of the Great Lakes is vital to help my students grow into stewards of our greatest freshwater resource. By embarking on a book study of "The Death and Life of the Great Lakes" my students will learn how the Great Lakes have been harmed in the past, how to learn from those mistakes, and how to move forward to positively impact them in the future. Reading this book will help my students think critically about their impact on the environment. Students will engage in discussion, debate, and research in conjunction with reading the text. Reading this book also ties into a place based stewardship project my students will be participating in this school year. We will be completing a project on the shores of Lake Huron in order to identify and remove invasive species, map an endangered wildflower, and also study micro-plastic pollution. The information they gain from reading the book will enable them to be more informed about how the work they are doing is positively impacting the health of the Lake Huron ecosystem. These books will be used not only this school year, but in the future as well. With the unique situation education is facing this school year, students can be loaned this book whether they are in the classroom or at home and discussions can take place either in person or online.
