I hope to send home four books for my 5th graders to have and hold forever. I do not wish to task the working-class families in my community with more expensive items on their back to school shopping list. They have enough on their plate during this pandemic. My students will be proud to hold their own copies of these novels. These four novels are the interactive-read-alouds for our units of study. Students will be free to highlight, annotate, and have a conversation with the text. In a class setting, we would spend a portion of our day reading together. In distance learning, I imagine, we will read together over Zoom from our homes. My hope is that these books impact and make an impression in their lives.
