Kindergarteners are expected to respond in writing in almost every subject area. They must learn the direction of the strokes and the letter formations, in addition to eventually writing words and sentences. Once they master that, they will be required to write opinion pieces and informative pieces. They will also have to write sequential narratives and reactions to text that they must edit. These expectations also require them to write numbers in Math. Each of these tasks require explicit instruction. Modeling expectations is extremely important at every grade level, especially Kindergarten. Using the iPad to mirror images on zoom will allow my ELA, Writing and Math lessons to be interactive. The Apple Pen will allow me to show my students proper pencil grip, precision in my penmanship and allow students to gain a better understanding of where we begin and end letters when writing on lines. Ideally, we would be in person to teach this often-intimidating task of writing but since there is a pandemic, we must do what we can to ensure our students get the best education possible, even if it is remote. My students will be asked questions like, "How do good writers use illustrations and words about events and characters to tell a story?" I will use a mirrored image to highlight illustrations, words, events and characters in the story that the author used to help us understand the text. Then, when I assign them to select an animal or a plant from one of two selections and explain about the animal's or the plant's home, I expect my students to be able to demonstrate their ability to complete this task and others like it because of my ability to use a mirrored image with explicit instruction and precise modeling.
