During guided reading lessons we always start with some word work. This foundational skill work directly supports both their reading and writing. We build words with magnetic letters and we break them apart into their different chunks. When students can build and break apart words with magnetic letters they are better able to "hold on" to these critical skills. Physically manipulating letters makes a huge difference in how well they internalize phonics. If this project gets funded my emergent readers will still be able to do this important work at home through distance learning!
