Most of my students come to me after having been expelled from their mainstream schools. They struggled with reading. It was never their favorite. They told me from day one that they did not like to read. They moaned and groaned when I suggested giving them time each day to read whatever book they chose. But I persisted! It was my goal to create a love for reading in my students. I filled my classroom with engaging novels, read alouds, and comic books. The walls were covered in quotes and book posters. I read to them every day. And low and behold the impossible started to happen. The bookshelves seemed lighter. Students began to beg me to go out and get the next in the series. Teachers had to take books because students were reading in other classes. My heart soured! They wanted to read! They really wanted to read! Then Covid-19 hit, my classroom kiddos had to stay home, and my many, many books stayed home with them. I am so grateful that they each now have at least one book in their house that they have chosen- that they picked and took home with them (even if that means that I'll never get them back). So after losing so many of our favorite books, I could really use help restocking my classroom bookshelves. Because I have learned over my years in the classroom that a well-stocked bookshelf is pivotal in creating a love for reading.
