For our unit this Fall, students will be reading "I Love Yous are for White People" by Lac Su. I decided to pick this book because Lac Su wrote about his personal experience of immigrating and acculturating to the American culture, challenging the “model minority” myth while highlighting his teenage experience growing up in Los Angeles. I know that many students in my classroom can connect to the painful and happy memories that he reflected on as a Vietnamese immigrant in his book. By reading this book together as a class, students will learn new reading strategies, writing tools, engage in critical thinking and dialog with each other about important topics that are relevant to their own lives. Due to distance learning, it’s important for each student in my classroom to have access to their own book. By contributing to this project, you are supporting a student with their own book to read and keep for themselves.
