When students have choice in what they read, they build their strength as independent readers. As Kate Roberts says, our lives and our very identities are shaped by the books we read. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, my students will be in our physical classroom only two days a week and will have limited access to other parts of the building, including our school library, for the foreseeable future. It's vital that our students have a rich, accessible classroom library where they can find the titles that speak to them quickly and easily. Donations to this project will give my students the shelving and bins they need for a fantastic classroom library and quick access to books despite Covid 19 restrictions. The most heartbreaking realization I have had in moving from first to eighth grade is that many students forget just how much they love reading and just how connected they are to the world around them. When we offer books for many reading ability levels and in varied formats, not just novels, but graphic novels, nonfiction, and novels in verse - reluctant readers remember just how exciting their inner worlds can be. They read with joy again. They build their confidence, and then they become readers for life. This project will help my students find those great books, take them home, and bloom. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
