The book is, "Beloved", by Toni Morrison, will enrich my tenth grade English Language Arts students. I strive to create a culturally responsive and diverse learning environment for my students. These books have been chosen with my marginalized students in mind because the many themes of this book are identity, racism, interpersonal relationships, and gender. With this book, they will enjoy reading and discussing because they are so well written and relevant to youth growing up with familial struggles. With this book, my students will be able to learn about youth who are dealing with identity, gender norms, relationships with parents and siblings, and surviving. It will set off as the opening novel of the quarter and delve into critical approaches to self-care, love, and the struggles to survive especially during this time of social distancing. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will help my students grow stronger in reading because they are such engaging and high-interest reads. This book will only help continue to enrich their experiences with literature and accessing history in alternative ways.
