We call our class "The Bridge" of MSHS, because we see it as a bridge from high school to future independence! We are constantly working on real-world life skills. That means going to the grocery store to comparison shop and make purchases from grocery lists. We cook a LOT, which means reading and following recipes, measuring, health/hygiene in the food industry, safe food handling, etc. We go out to eat, where students are given a "budget" and are able to choose and order their own meals. They are also taught and expected to practice good table manners and social skills. We work together to clean our space and supplies, from washing dishes to keeping our supplies organized to sweeping and mopping. We take many job shadowing and exploration field trips, allowing the students to develop appropriate work-related skills and awareness. We do lots of cooperative learning, which provides opportunities to learn about diversity, compassion, and working as productive team members. This project involves creating individual home/school personal learning kits so that we can continue providing real-world learning experiences, even in a virtual/hybrid format! As you can see, our class has a very hands-on focus. This is how my students learn best and is truly necessary for skill mastery and generalization. However, with the restrictions related to COVID-19, none of those activities are possible at this time. This project is an attempt to overcome those obstacles and keep the learning going. I have already purchased "shoebox" containers, and several items for each student. (We are unable to share any materials or supplies.) I quickly realized that it will be very costly to make this work, so I'm asking for your help. Please help them by providing necessary resources that keep learning fun, interactive, and meaningful!
