We have thoroughly enjoyed the use of our new novels and I would love to tell you a little more about that!\r\n As it comes to my classroom I love to give students the whole picture when we start a novel. This will include a presentation on the background knowledge of the novel while relating it to other titles they may be familiar with. For example we were donated That was Then, This is Now by S.E Hinton. I use this novel in my Sophomore class and I explain to them that this is the same author who wrote The Outsiders novel that they read in their previous English class. I even give them a spoiler that we will see a familiar face from that novel in our new novel. After that we talk about the setting of the story, when did it take place, where did it take place and what was happening in the world during that time. For example in The Secret Life of Bees we talk about the Civil Rights Movement before we start the novel so that we can have further context and understand the emotional impact of certain scenarios and situations. \r\n As for my classroom reading often looks like each student with an open book and a copy of reading guide questions about what is going on in the chapter so they follow along and can also gain a further understanding about the chapter and the events of that chapter. They then turn this paper in for a grade. \r\n I have had many students inform me on how much they have enjoyed reading books like The Hunger Games. The students always enjoy this novel as it is centered around teenagers that they can easily relate to and they always get involved in developing their own versions of mutations as well as developing their own arenas in the eyes of the game makers. The students love seeing the behavior of Mark and Brian as teenagers in That was Then, This is Now just because the time period was so different back then. Students often find themselves relating to either Mark or Brian especially when it gets towards their fight. Lastly, there are so many life lessons to take away from The Secret Life of Bees that all students find themselves reflecting on the wise words that Sue Monk Kidd gives them through the voice of Lily or August. Overall the students usually begin with being restless about having to read and by the time we get to chapter 4 they are sucked in and HAVE to know more. \r\n Finally I want to again thank you all so much for your donations and I hope that in the future when the opportunity presents itself you will donate to the field of education. These projects a donations go a long way and make such a difference in the lives of teachers and students.","fullyFundedDate":1761681589830,"projectUrl":"project/mrs-dowells-book-fund/9525010/","projectTitle":"Mrs. Dowell’s Book Fund!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Dowell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10106553"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_34535","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":564,"numTeachers":51,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":92,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":74.6,"schoolId":34535,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Marion Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Marion Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/smyth-county-school-district/marion-senior-high-school/34535"}
