Most of my students are children of color. I feel like it is incredibly important for them to see individuals like them represented in literature. They can see that there is more than just the white perspective that has become so mainstream in their young lives. These stories will also broaden the understanding of my Caucasian students and help them develop empathy for other cultures and especially their classmates. I have a plan to have virtual storytime on Fridays during this new teaching norm. I will be reading books like these to my students with the intent of helping them become more well-rounded citizens and future community leaders.
