I have 13 ukuleles and have always made do with what I have by partner play and taking turns. Right now, in the middle of a pandemic, we will not have the luxury of sharing anything, including instruments. My third-fifth graders absolutely love playing ukulele each year, but unless I can get 10 more for this year I will have to take Ukulele out of my curriculum because of sanitation restrictions.
When we begin our Ukulele unit, the kids get so excited and want to dive into learning how to accompany themselves while we sing! We begin by talking about the history of the instruments and compare them to other string instruments. We learn the parts of the Ukulele and how to hold it properly, strumming patterns, and finally, how to read chords. Once we have those things down we get to rock out! Students love learning chords so they can sing on their own and accompany themselves. It is such a great feeling!
I will be so disappointed (and so will the students) if we can't play Ukulele this year because of cleaning restrictions. I hope, with your help, we will be able to purchase the instruments needed to complete a class set!
