Students are swirling with emotions in preparing to return to school, either virtually or in-person, in the midst of all that has been 2020. First graders need direct support in how to identify what they feel, and then in how to process those feelings in a healthy way. It is critical we teachers help them navigate their emotional journey so they are able to relax and learn. I am asking for funding for a social emotional library that will do just this. Normally we read to focus on the characters in our stories, but this project helps students focus on developing their own character through reading. The stories in this project are engaging to students, like My Mouth is a Volcano, and grab their attention. As they laugh through the story and make a good connection, I'll be able to harness that enjoyment for learning. Using follow up reflections, games, writing, and art, students will be able to identify their own areas for character growth. These lessons and activities can be done virtually or in-person as I read and interact with students on screen or in the classroom. Each story will serve as an anchor for the emotional and behavioral resilience I want to foster in them, and be a meaningful reference for the rest of the year. School is so much more than learning standards. We are developing whole people who need to know how to handle emotions, have strong character, and lead by serving. While it's true those lessons start at home, I can also support that in the classroom using social emotional literature while reaching learning standards at the same time. Thank you for helping me develop readers, with character.
