When I was a student I always was frustrated when I would receive assignments back and was unsure as to why I got the grade I did. Because of this I strive to give feedback, particularly on writing assignments, that explains what a student may be struggling with and points them in the right direction to work towards. While it may make my job take a little longer, I have seen how much these high achieving students appreciate this feedback. When we were moved to online learning in March of last school year, teachers adapted as best as possible, however giving this feedback my students have been accustomed to became difficult. Although you can use programs such as Google docs to leave comments and edits, I knew that if we returned online I would have to find a way to emulate handwritten feedback. After researching I have found that the best way to do this is to download a students assignment onto an iPad, and then write feedback directly onto the PDF of the students work using a compatible digital pencil. Students then would receive their assignment back as a marked up PDF. An iPad and pencil could also be used as a "second screen" during a Zoom learning session or a recorded lesson which would allow me to use the iPad similarly to the way a whiteboard is used in the classroom.
