To quote Gloria Ladson-Billings (1995), I strive in my classroom to "insert education into culture, instead of culture into education" (p. 159). For literacy, this means that I want my students to see themselves and their lives reflected back to them in stories they hear and read. Additionally, having a diverse and multicultural library allows students of all races, cultures, and backgrounds to become more empathetic and compassionate for people different from them. In my classroom, I hope to read my students stories that reflect the width and breadth of their life experiences. I want them to open the pages and see themselves in its illustrations, while also discover books that show them new worlds. Help me to craft this library, and bring literary magic to my classroom!
