As a music teacher, a successful transition into my music room is crucial, and writing journals are a great way for a lot of my students to transition positively. Lots of my students have difficulty regulating their emotions and controlling their actions. It really helps them when they can answer a writing prompt because it allows them to write down how they are feeling, process those feelings, talk about those feelings in pair sharing or group discussions, and prevents inappropriate behaviors in the middle of class. Furthermore, my students use black binders throughout the school year to help them keep track of their music and during performances.
