Please help me provide a personal copy of The Hate U Give to each of my 8th grade students. The Hate U Give is the story of Starr Carter, who is forced to speak up after watching her best friend Khalil be shot and killed by the police. Angie Thomas' book tells a complex story with authentic characters and unforgettable voices; many of my students have described the book as the best book they'd ever read with the first characters they actually cared about. Unfortunately, the class set of 20 school-owned books we'd typically use won't work when none of my students are in the building. In this current moment in American history, now is not the time to skip The Hate U Give due to distance learning. In fact, as they deal with the separation caused by COVID-19 and the stress caused by racial injustice in the news, my students deserve to feel affirmation of their experiences and community even more than usual. Please consider supporting this project so I can give a copy of The Hate U Give to each of my students, for them to keep.
