Ukuleles are one of the easiest instruments to learn because there are only four strings instead of six strings like a guitar. A ukulele's small size makes it ideal for elementary students. In the time of COVID, these plastic ukuleles are easy to disinfect and clean. I am working to build a class set of ukuleles so that my 2nd through 5th grades students can create their own songs. Students will learn different songs from a variety of styles. At the end of the ukulele unit, they will use their new chord skills to write their own songs and lyrics in their favorite style. I hope that through this, students see music as a beautiful way to use music to let their unique voice speak.
