As a low-wealth and small school district, our resources are very limited with 53% of our 580 students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. A mental picture of our county is rolling hills in the north and flat lands to the south. Included within this vast area are family farms, livestock, dense timber, mom and pop businesses, gravel or dirt roads, modest homes or trailers, one traffic signal, and relatively little affluence but lots and lots of wholesome and patriotic Americans. At the heart of Oglethorpe County is its largest employer and arguably most influential presence, the school system. Although our students do not come from affluent families there is a lot of community pride with the county helping to take care of their own.
