My students have learned to be very flexible learners as they transition between their homeroom classroom and their service rooms for direct instruction in areas like reading, math, and speech. At this young age, their ability to adapt is admirable, and I hope to accommodate them in my classroom as much as possible. I currently have an area of my classroom that is adapted to a flexible seating model, but I hope to expand into a fully flexible classroom. Many of these students do their best work when they are able to work comfortably, rather than at the typical desk setting. Flexible seating allows students to experiment with their environment and discover how they best learn. Such choices in seating arrangements encourage students to be aware of themselves and what they may be doing that can interfere with their learning. My students are so flexible with me, and flexible seating will allow me to be flexible with them!
