When I began teaching in January, I inherited a massive class library with over 500 books from the previous teacher! I was ecstatic...until I started doing through the books and realized that there were very few books that represented the students in our class. Out of 500 books, only 9 books had characters who were Black or POC. In my class there were 22 students, 21 were Black. Based on the recommendations that class libraries should have about 30 books per student, I need 660 books for my library. In order for my class library to represent the population of my class, 95% of those books should have Black or POC as characters...that's 630 books!!! Please help me provide my students with books that represent them. Doing so would help students build self esteem, and help peak an interest in literature that would positively impact reading ability, fluency, help students grow a rich vocabulary and SO MUCH MORE!
