Jesmyn Ward writes the story of a young black girl pregnant and preparing for Hurricane Katrina. With this novel, students will not just explore one of the most devastating natural disasters in American history but will consider the ways black womanhood, poverty, and systemic racism can amplify conversations about how our country prepares and protects ALL of its people from the debilitating trauma of monstrous storms. It is these stories of pain and loss, and also perseverance and hope, that engage the minds of young adults who are preparing to make their own mark on the world. With copies of "Salvage The Bones," I plan to enrich students' exploration of relevant social justice topics aimed at national change.
