Each year I build a sensory center and calm down corner for my students. I fill it with playdough, slime, stuffed animals, sensory pillows, and comfy rugs. This year is going to have to be different: I need materials that are not fabric and easy to clean to increase safety among my students during this pandemic. With the materials listed in my project, I will be able to wipe down the center after each student uses it, allowing for easier access to necessary brain breaks. This way, my students will still have a safe and comfortable space in our room to take a break, regulate their sensory needs, and learn about emotional regulation. Thank you for your consideration; my students and I work so hard each year and I want them to know that, even when their disability makes learning harder, they are still cherished and will have security in working through their emotions and meeting their sensory needs.
