With what we have collected so far and the books we hope to gain through this project, our goal is to get a copy of Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You: A Remix of the National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning in the hands of every student in our 11th-grade level ELA classes. As teachers, it is our responsibility to respond to the immediate needs of students; we believe that current need is a critical look into the history of racism through this text and the honest conversations we trust will come from our reading. Based on our relationships with students and the conversations we have had over the past year, we believe our students are ready to dig into this difficult work, and we are excited to learn alongside them. By using this book instead of some often-used canonical texts of a traditional American Literature course, we hope new learning will emerge and more students will be able to see themselves reflected in their reading like never before.
