We created 3D shapes such as pyramids, cones, cylinders, and even composite objects. By creating them as hollow figures (unlike store-bought blocks), students could fill them with rice then compare and contrast the relationships between the objects, especially when there were different sizes (scale factors). We continued by printing things like random triangles or quadrilaterals so that students could physically connect with concepts. Ultimately, the greatest benefit of even these simple items was a significant improvement in comprehension with our English-language learners and our students receiving services through special education! Overall, our test scores (including district benchmarks) increased considerably, but we also found that students were getting more involved.\r\n\r\nWe also encountered an unexpected benefit. Many of our students wanted to KEEP the objects we were creating. They wanted to take the cubes and prisms, cylinders and cones, and then color or paint them or decorate them with stickers. We began creating extras and using the items as positive-behavior rewards. We have always known that almost any student would get excited for something like a common sticker, but now, they wants things like 3D printed squares that they can decorate and even ask to get them printed with small holes (enabling the students to attach them to their ID lanyards). So not only were they getting more excited about classwork, they were working even harder when they knew they could earn the manipulatives as rewards. We are now extending that by creating customized items (ID holders, fidget toys, coasters, etc.) when students earn enough positive-behavior points.\r\n\r\nWe could not have extended this project without the assistance of great donors, for which we are most grateful. Thank you.","fullyFundedDate":1685283340805,"projectUrl":"project/creative-manipulatives-for-the-geometry/7397013/","projectTitle":"Creative Manipulatives for the Geometry Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Ketchum","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5477373_orig.jpg?crop=951,951,x713,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1684806249606","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5477373"},{"teacherId":9807776,"projectId":8888473,"letterContent":"From my students and I, a BIG Thank you for choosing to invest in our classroom!!! Our clip on phone macro lenses have been a great tool in helping us see the world in unique ways. We've been able to challenge ourselves to find the extraordinary in the ordinary!\r\n\r\nMost of my students are 9th graders who have never taken an art class before, and are hesitant to learn new skills that are difficult, or have challenges with fine motor skills like painting and drawing. Technology on the other hand has always been a part of their lives and most are proficient phone users. Adding a macro photo unit to my Intro to Art curriculum has allowed many students to find an interest in artistic pursuits that fit within the realm of their perceived skills. It's easy to learn and fun to do! \r\n\r\nI found that the students really enjoyed seeing everyday items and scenes in new ways, and that perspective really changes everything. Many were excited enough about it to sign up for photography next year. Some students even purchased their own clip on lenses to continue exploring the world, and plan to enter their phone photography into competitions!","fullyFundedDate":1739371106992,"projectUrl":"project/everyday-wonder-professional-skills-/8888473/","projectTitle":"Everyday Wonder & Professional Skills - Cell Phone Photography","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lee","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9807776_orig.jpg?crop=1575,1575,x0,y162&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729199417356","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9807776"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_121272","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":3987,"numTeachers":87,"percentFrplEligible":57,"percentAsian":11,"percentBlack":14,"percentWhite":31,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":39,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"45.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.7,"schoolId":121272,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Klein Cain High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Klein Cain High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/klein-independent-school-district/klein-cain-high-school/121272"}
