Our classroom is housed in a Vocational Center that used to be an elementary school in the 1960s. The oven/stovetop that we currently have access to is very old and not what students would use when they live on their own. The oven/stovetop is housed in a room that also holds welding tanks-that could be dangerous if they explode. In order to get to the "kitchen," students need to travel through the construction classroom that often is full of lumber and the floor is slippery due to sawdust. We have had to move much of our cooking to the classroom where we use a toaster oven or microwave. This does not help the students learn true cooking skills.
