I would love all of second grade to be able to utilize the garden as an outdoor classroom on a regular basis. In our gardens, we have a whiteboard for teaching and mats that the students made to sit on during lessons. If the students have clipboards to use in the garden during lessons, observations, etc., it would make it much easier for the students to complete work outdoors. Science journals could be used both in the classroom and outdoors. The same journals could be used for any writing, math, reading, or social studies lessons that are integrated into the science lessons. Having magnifying glasses on lanyards will provide the opportunity for students to be actively engaged while exploring and observing in the garden. Having books that are related to the science curriculum will help students gain a better understanding of what they are learning. Not only will using the garden as a classroom benefit the students with the academic curriculum, but studies show that there are many benefits for the whole student as well. These include mental, emotional, and social well-being along with improved attentiveness in all subject areas.
