After a year of virtual/hybrid learning, students acclimated to learning from a variety of spaces and seating arrangements. At home, they learned on couches, kitchen tables, floor cushions, bar stools, and their own beds. As students reenter the classroom, they will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of concepts through peer work, but need appropriate seating to accommodate their needs. My goal is to revive collaboration and small group work in a way that both allows for social distancing and physical movement. Integrating flexible seating options will help meet students' physical needs while working, and will empower students to choose and reflect where they learn best. They will be given the opportunity to determine what environment helps them remain engaged in discourse and product creation. Mobile desks of varying height will allow students to work outside with adequate airflow for partner work, and the ability to adjust height will enable them to choose whether they prefer to sit or stand. Inside my classroom, wobble stools will provide adequate movement support for group tables. Yoga balls with base support will provide an additional option for students who need movement to remain engaged in learning, and balance boards provide movement for students who prefer to stand while working. All of these options promote physical health and wellness in addition to empowering student choice, and group collaboration.
