It is important for all students to have the opportunity to read quality books. Sadly, students from low-income families don't have this opportunity. Reading helps boost students' scores across the subject areas. Having some "good" books helps get students hooked on reading. I have also included some diverse books as well. Reading books with main characters from different cultures helps students have empathy for those who are different than them. Also, in my school, where students are from different ethnic groups, it is important for them to "see themselves" in the main character of a story. Low-income students deserve to have brand new, back to school supplies. I have included colored pencils, crayons, pencil boxes, and personal pencil sharpeners for each of my students to help them feel special! In this time of COVID, each student having their own items can help prevent the spread of illness. Thank you so much for your help!
