These books include the many cultures and ethnicities featured in my classroom. They will help my students see themselves in literature. Letting them know that their culture matters. It will help white students understand other cultures and avoid centering whiteness when learning and understanding other cultures. Having picture books for my fourth graders will make them more aware of the world around them. That in itself is a great way to continue an inquisitive nature in students and having discussions about what they learned in picture books. As a Latina teacher myself, I would like my students to be able to discuss a range of topics without thinking they are doing something wrong.
