It is so crucial for underrepresented kids to see themselves reflected as leaders and stakeholders in all aspects of their life - including books! These books are intentionally chosen to provide young leaders the opportunity to read and learn about individuals of diverse backgrounds and abilities. Topics of the books on this list include discussions of race/racism, immigration, Asian-American history, African-American history, individuals of different ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and more! If they're young enough to experience it, they're old enough to talk about it. Our young scholars know more than we give them credit for. They are aware of social issues that exist in adult conversations, media, and in their community. My goal with these books is to provide students an opportunity to explore these topics, as well as creating a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and discussing them with peers.
