My students love read-alouds and exploring new texts. The classroom library I am inheriting contains many nonfiction books, however, it does not represent the diversity in our classroom and our world. These new books will depict characters my students can see themselves reflected in, as well as those who are of a different race, culture, or background. The materials students see themselves in shape their beliefs about the spaces in which they belong and whose stories are valued, especially in a foundational grade like first. All students deserve to be represented and celebrated in stories that engage them. These texts will aid us in having the important conversations necessary for creating equitable, antiracist practices both in and out of the classroom. With your help, my students will gain access to books that affirm their identities and the power of their voices.
