Kindness matters! In a world that needs more love and understanding, it is ever so important to nurture kind minds. My second graders will be creating a kindness garden because... kindness rocks! Due to the current pandemic, students will be in the classroom part time and online the other half of the week. We will be doing a Kindness Unit with an emphasis on reading standards (like character traits, author's message, story structure, etc.), social and emotional learning, as well as learning to be positive community members. Using books like, "A Little Spot of Kindness" or "I am Love, a book about Compassion" will help students to develop ideas and an understanding of how one act of kindness, no matter the size, will make the difference in someone's day. Plant the seeds of kindness, harvest the garden of love. Our students will be spreading kindness by painting rocks with a kind and loving message to promote others to be kind, that's the "Art" in STEAM! Our rocks will come together in our community to create a Kindness Garden to shine and spread the word of love. In addition, we will incorporate "Science and Technology" by learning about and researching the plants in our community garden and how we care for them. Every living thing needs love. Finally, for "Engineering and Math," we will be creating and implementing a plan about how best to create our Kindness Rock Garden to benefit our school community. Please help us in creating a Kindness movement! "To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." - Audrey Hepburn
