During storytime, our shared books provide my students opportunities to learn about new topics, visit places around the world, grow socially and emotionally and tackle issues like sharing, inclusivity, equity, empathy and acceptance. Our read-aloud books must honor my students by reflecting who they are while also serving as windows to open their hearts to those who are different. I want to provide my kindergarteners with an amazing library of read-aloud books that reflect or mirror my diverse students. As my kindergarten friends fall in love with stories, books and reading, I want them to see themselves and their families reflected in the books I read to them daily. I want my students to feel valued, validated and affirmed as they make connections with the beloved characters in our books. In addition, it is my hope that these books will open up worlds to my students as they will serve as windows to other cultures, traditions, and families different from their own. These titles, that will become classroom favorites, will celebrate diversity while promoting both empathy and equity among my students. We can never underestimate the power of books to open our minds and leave footprints on our hearts!! Our current read-aloud books are sadly lacking the diverse characters and topics I would love to share with my students. It is my hope that through this project I will be able to provide my students with the read-alouds they deserve!! Whether we are learning from a distance or in the classroom, books will always serve as a way to reflect and share our own unique experiences and unite us. "Books can be mirrors reflecting who we are--and they can be windows in to a wider reality beyond our own lived experience." (Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop)
