Our school continues to develop short-term and long-term sustainability goals through Project Zero Waste, a Service Learning project that educates students on the value of natural resources and introduces them to the 5R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Rot, Repurpose, Recycle). Students learn to reduce their impact on the environment by incorporating the 5R’s at school. A green team comprised of students in grades 2-5, collects and recycles cans and bottles. They also help with school waste audits, lunchtime waste sorting, and composting. We use vermicomposting to break down food scraps and reduce lunchtime waste. Students share the zero waste message with family members to improve their overall health and wellness. By purchasing a refillable water station, we are helping the green efforts of the environment, as many disposable water bottles simply get thrown out. For instance: In 2012, only nine percent of the total plastic waste generated was recycled according to the EPA. In addition, we are offering students a hands free way to refill their water bottles which helps in the efforts to keep us all healthy as less germs can be spread this way.
