No one likes being told what to do, especially teenagers. They have a mind of their own and know what they do and don't like. This applies to books as well. Many high school students can pinpoint when they stopped enjoying reading as a past time: middle school when assigned texts became the norm. Studies show that when students have choice in the books they read, their reading scores not only improve but their mastery of other subject areas do as well. Students who have access to quality literature read 50-60% more than those who don't. I want to provide my class with a library that is diverse and relevant. I want to provide them with texts that expose them to other worlds and people who are different from them. With this collection of books, students will be able to enjoy independent reading at the start of every class. Independent reading is imperative to good vocabulary, comprehension, and building confidence in reading. Most importantly, it gives students the opportunity to find a book they love and to fall in love with reading!
