I said earlier that my students learn the best when the material is relevant and challenging, but they also learn best when they have some choice in the material that they read. As I try to amplify Black voices in my curriculum through poetry, novels, articles etc, I also want to give my students a choice because they will engage with difficult topics more fully if they chose the piece. Through this project, students will be able to choose a book and as a class, we will discuss the civil war, apartheid in South Africa, and the BLM movement. I don't believe that my students know enough about the history of violence and oppression due to race and how that impacts our current reality. These books will be the beginning of important research and discussion.
