Many children can forget some of what they have learned over the summer. Students get out of the practice of reading regularly without books in the home (as is the case of many of my students). Through this online summer reading program, students can tune in 2-3 times per week to hear another chapter of a fun summer book. Keeping students tuned in over the summer after 3 months of remote learning will be a challenge - offering raffle prizes as a reward for those students who choose to tune in for each chapter will help. For each reading session, students will collect a word of the day. At the end of the book, students will trade in their collected words for raffle tickets. The more appealing the raffle prizes, the greater the incentive for tuning in to each chapter, and the more we can reinforce the habit of reading regularly. Crayola markers are always a huge hit among students of this age group, and the Spanish English Zingo is a great game for students to share with their families. Both of these items will be fun rewards for students who participate.
