Art Speigelman said it best: "Comics are the gateway drug to literacy." If we are honest with ourselves, I think the pleasurable days of our reading from illustrated books were grudgingly accepted as over when we became more "mature" readers. However, the graphic novel is not merely an illustrated book. It offers text in a dynamic, expressive visual font that enhances the textual impact of the story. It provides meaningful pauses via its cell-by-cell motif while offering a whole page of different scenarios per cell that emphasize the dramatic tensions of the storyline. And not to be understated, the color and black and white cartoon images can lend a great hand to the reader's attention, particularly as they undeniably surround the actual text. Finally, the graphic novel genre is well-suited to the generations of young people who have learned multitasking at an early age, and who prefer literature to be entertaining, whenever possible.
